Slow Mailboxes

1. When I visit major tourist spots, I sometimes come across something called a “slow mailbox.”
 주요 관광지를 가다 보면 ‘느리게 가는 우체통’이라는 것을 발견하곤 한다.

 ● come across something: ~을 우연히 발견하다
  - I came across an old photo while cleaning my room.
   (방을 치우다가 오래된 사진을 우연히 발견했다.)
  - We came across a cute café near the station.
   (우리는 역 근처에서 귀여운 카페를 우연히 발견했다.)

2. Whenever I see one, I almost never skip the chance to handwrite a letter to my family.
 나는 이럴 때마다 거의 빼먹지 않고 가족에게 손 편지를 쓴다.

  - I never skip a chance to eat there when I visit the neighborhood.

3. I always get caught up in the moment, so my handwriting or the content is usually a little messy.
 매번 마음이 앞서다 보니 글씨체나 내용이 좀 엉성한 경우가 많다.

  - I was too excited and got caught up in the moment.
   (나는 너무 들떠서 감정에 휩싸이고 말았다.)

4. A postcard I had dropped into a slow mailbox finally arrived at our home recently.
 최근에 ‘느린 우체통’을 통해 보낸 엽서가 마침내 집에 도착했다.

   (그는 모르게 열쇠를 가방에 넣었다.)
  - I dropped the envelope into the mailbox.

5. Just imagining the look on my family’s faces made me smile.
 이를 받게 될 가족의 얼굴을 떠올리면 입가에 미소가 번지게 된다.

6. I also felt grateful to the postal workers who made sure it was delivered.
 그리고 엽서를 확실히 배달해 주신 우체국 직원들에게 감사하는 마음이 들었다.

  - Please make sure the door is locked.
   (문이 잠겼는지 꼭 확인해 줘.)
  - They made sure everyone got the message.
   (그들은 모두가 메시지를 받았는지 확실히 했다.)

7. In this digital age where everything is fast-paced and information is sent instantly, there’s something so warm about a heartfelt letter.
 모든 것이 빠르게 돌아가고 정보가 신속하게 전해지는 디지털 시대에, 이런 정감 어린 편지가 참 따뜻하게 느껴진다.

  - We live in a fast-paced world.

8. It lets you revisit old memories and strengthens family bonds. I really hope these slow mailboxes will continue to exist.
 과거의 추억을 되새기고 가족 간의 정도 돈독히 할 수 있다는 점에서, 이 느린 우체통이 앞으로도 계속 남아 있으면 하는 바람이다.

 ● revisit old memories: 옛 추억을 되새기다
  - The photos helped me revisit old memories.
   (그 사진들이 옛 추억을 되새기게 해 주었다.)
  - Traveling to my hometown always makes me revisit old memories.

   (명절은 가족 유대감을 강화할 좋은 기회다.)



<Dialogue Practice>

A: There was a postcard in the mailbox, so I brought it in.
B: Oh, that. It's a postcard I sent through a slow mailbox.
A: So it's a letter for me, then.
B: I didn't think it would arrive until the end of the year. It came sooner than I expected.
A: The handwriting and content look a bit rough, though.
B: Yeah, I must have rushed it. Next time, I'll take more care and put more heart into it.

A: 우편함에 엽서가 있어서 가지고 왔어요.
B: 아, 그거. 느리게 가는 우체통으로 보낸 엽서인데.
A: 그럼 저에게 보낸 편지로군요.
B: 연말에나 도착할 줄 알았는데, 생각보다 빨리 왔네요.
A: 근데 글씨체와 내용이 좀 엉성하네요.
B: 서둘러서 쓰다 보니 그랬나 봐요. 다음에는 더 신경 써서 정성껏 써 볼게요.
