Altar Servers

1. In the Catholic Church, the people who assist the priest during Mass are called altar servers.

 성당에서 신부님이 미사를 집전하실 때 옆에서 돕는 사람을 ‘복사’라고 합니다.

2. Before Mass begins, they light the candles on the altar.

 복사는 미사 전에 제단에 촛불을 겁니다.

3. They also carry the cross in the procession and prepare the water and wine that the priest will use. It’s an important role in the service.

 그리고 십자가를 들고 행렬을 하거나 의식에서 사제가 사용하는 물과 포도주 등을 준비하는 중요한 역할을 합니다.

4. Both of my daughters are altar servers at our local parish.

 저희 두 딸은 우리가 다니는 성당에서 복사로 활동하고 있습니다.

5. Even in the early mornings, they never complain and faithfully carry out their duties.

 이른 새벽에도 불평 한 번 없이 성실히 임무를 수행하는 모습이 정말 예쁘고 기특합니다.

6. I am so proud of them. But sometimes, when I see them fighting off sleep during Mass, I feel a little sorry for them.

 가끔 미사 중에 졸음을 참아 가며 힘들어 하는 모습을 볼 때는 조금 안쓰럽기도 합니다.

7. Still, I’m grateful to see how they’re learning responsibility and contributing to the community through this work.

 그래도 이 활동을 통해 아이들이 책임감을 배우고 공동체에 기여하는 모습을 보니 감사한 마음이 듭니다.

  - They are learning how to contribute to the community.

A: Your daughters are so dedicated as altar servers.
B: Yes, I am so proud of them.
A: Back when we were kids, only boys could serve, right?
B: That's right. But the Vatican changed that rule in 1994.
A: I remember hearing that, too.
B: These days, people can serve regardless of gender in most churches in Korea.

A: 딸들이 복사 활동을 열심히 하네요
B: 네, 참 의젓하고 기특해요.
A: 우리 어릴 때는 남자아이들만 복사를 할 수 있었죠?
B: 맞아요. 1994년에 교황청이 그 규정을 바꿨어요
A: 저도 그렇게 들은 기억이 나요.
B: 요즘은 한국 대부분의 성당에서 남녀 구분 없이 복사를 할 수 있어요
