My Father

1. My father passed away twelve years ago, but I still find myself thinking about him from time to time.

 우리 아버지는 12년 전에 돌아가셨지만, 아직도 아버지가 종종 생각납니다.

2. Because of his difficult background, he only managed to finish elementary school. He spent his whole life doing physical labor to provide for our family.

 아버지는 어려운 형편 때문에 초등학교를 겨우 졸업하셨고, 평생 육체 노동을 하며 우리 가족을 책임지셨습니다.

3. Looking back, my father was a very warm-hearted person.

 돌이켜 보면 아버지는 정말 따뜻한 분이셨습니다.

4. When I was in high school, I once had my wallet stolen.

 제가 고등학생일 때 지갑을 도둑맞은 적이 있었습니다.

5. I felt so guilty about losing it and I didn’t know how to face my parents.

 저는 지갑을 잃어버린 것이 너무 죄송해서 부모님 얼굴을 볼 수가 없었습니다.

 ● don’t know how to face: ~을 볼 면목이 없다
  - I felt so guilty about losing it and didn’t know how to face my parents.
   (지갑을 잃어버린 것이 너무 죄송해서 부모님 얼굴을 볼 수가 없었습니다.)
  - I felt so bad that I didn’t know how to face her.
   (너무 속상해서 앞으로 그녀를 어떻게 볼지 막막했다.)
  - I don’t know how to face them after that mistake.
   (그렇게 실수해서 그들을 볼 면목이 없다.)

6. My father was usually reserved. But he said, “It’s okay that you lost the money. It hurts me more that you feel sorry about losing it.”

 평소 무뚝뚝하신 아버지께서 오셔서 “돈을 잃어버린 건 괜찮다. 나는 네가 잃어버린 것 때문에 우리에게 미안해하는 것이 더 마음이 아프구나.”라고 하셨습니다.

7. Parents notice how their children feel and offer comfort. I think that kind of love is beyond words.

 자식의 마음을 알아채고 위로해 주시는 부모님의 사랑은 정말 헤아리기 어려운 것 같습니다.

 ● be beyond words: 말로 형언할 수 없다
  - I think that kind of love is beyond words.
   (그런 사랑은 정말 헤아리기 어려운 것 같습니다.)
  - The love between a parent and child is beyond words.
   (부모와 자식 간의 사랑은 말로 형언할 수 없다.)

B: It sounds like you were really close.
A: He wasn't very talkative, but he had such a warm heart.
B: That reminds me of my own dad.

B: 돌아가신 지 얼마나 되었어요?
A: 이제 10년이 훌쩍 넘었죠
B: 아버지와 사이가 각별하셨나 봐요
