Pregnant Seating

1. Starting with Seoul in 2013, Korea has introduced a system that designates seats for pregnant women on public transportation.

 2013년 서울을 시작으로 우리나라는 대중교통에 임산부용 좌석을 지정하는 제도를 도입하였다.

2. These seats are color-coded pink and marked with the words “Reserved for Pregnant Women.”

 임산부 좌석은 분홍색으로 구분되어 있고 ‘임산부 배려석’이라는 문구가 써 있다.

3. But in reality, it’s common to see other people sitting there with the mindset of, “I’ll move if a pregnant woman comes along.”

 그러나 실상은 임산부가 오면 비켜 주겠다는 생각으로 아무나 앉아 있는 경우가 많다.

4. Looking back to when I was pregnant, I really think those seats should always be kept empty.

 내가 임신했을 때를 돌아보면 임산부 좌석은 꼭 비워 두어야 한다.

 그렇지 않으면 임산부가 인파를 뚫고 가서 자리를 양보해 달라고 말하기가 참 어렵다.

6. Most people who are seated there are glued to their phones or have their eyes closed.

 사람들은 대부분 임산부 좌석에 앉아서 휴대폰만 쳐다보거나 눈을 감고 있다.

  - Most people there are glued to their phones.
   (그 자리에 앉은 사람들은 대부분 휴대폰만 본다.)
  - Everyone on the bus was glued to their phone.

  - I was glued to my phone throughout the match.
   (나는 경기 내내 휴대폰만 쳐다봤다.)

7. I hope that everyone will be more considerate, so that expectant mothers and their babies can sit in their designated seats.

 예비 엄마와 뱃속 아기가 임산부 배려석에 앉을 수 있도록 모두가 더 배려했으면 좋겠다.

B: People must be considerate toward others for it to work well.

B: 네, 맞아요. 항상 비워 두는 것이 좋지요.
