Our Dog, Gaji

1. My family’s dog, Gaji, just turned four this year.

 우리 집 강아지, 가지는 올해 네 살이 되었다.

2. I live abroad, so I only get to see her for about a month each year when I visit my parents.

 해외에서 거주하는 나는 1년에 부모님을 찾아가는 한 달 정도밖에 가지를 보지 못한다.

3. But even from afar, Gaji gives me the motivation I need to get through another year overseas.

 하지만 멀리 있어도 가지는 나에게 또 1년의 해외 생활을 버티게 하는 큰 원동력이 되어 준다.

4. When I first met her, I just thought of her as a dog.

 가지를 처음 만났을 때, 단순히 강아지라고만 생각했었다.

 ● just think of someone as: 단지 ~로 생각하다
  - When I first met Gaji, I just thought of her as a dog.
   (처음에는 가지를 단지 강아지로만 생각했다.)

5. But as time went on, I realized dogs have emotions and can deeply connect with people.

 하지만 시간이 지날수록 강아지도 감정이 있고 사람과 깊이 교감한다는 것을 느끼게 되었다.

   (강아지는 사람과 깊이 교감할 수 있다.)

6. Gaji has become part of our family and brings us joy every day.

 가지는 그렇게 우리의 가족이 되었고 우리에게 매일 기쁨을 가져다준다.

7. I’m especially grateful for the way she has given my father newfound energy after his retirement.

 특히 은퇴하신 아빠에게 새로운 활력을 불어넣어 준 점이 가장 고맙다.

8. Thanks to Gaji, he is getting over his slump.

 가지 덕분에 아빠는 무기력감을 이겨내고 있다.

  - Thanks to Gaji, my dad is getting over his slump.
   (아빠는 가지 덕분에 슬럼프를 극복하고 있다.)
  - Meditating helped me get over my slump.

9. Sometimes, I think pet dogs might be even better than children.

 가끔은 반려견이 오히려 자식보다 나은 게 아닐까 싶다.

A: Oh, your parents keep a dog at home?
B: Yeah, she's the cutest little thing.
A: Pets really are part of the family these days.
B: That's right. When I call home and say her name on video chat, her ears perk right up.

B: 당연히 보고 싶죠. 우리 강아지도 너무 보고 싶고요
A: 아, 본가에서 강아지를 기르시나 봐요?
B: 네. 하는 짓이 너무 귀여운 녀석이에요.
A: 반려견도 이제 정말 가족이 된 시대죠.
B: 맞아요. 집에 전화해서 화상 통화로 이름을 부르면, 귀를 쫑긋하고 반응해요.
