250909(T) Studying Foreign Languages

 
 
I teach math to students for a living, but my hobby is studying foreign languages. 
저는 생계를 위해 학생들에게 수학을 가르치지만, 취미는 외국어 공부입니다.
People sometimes ask me why I put so much effort into my studies.
사람들은 가끔 왜 그렇게 열심히 공부하냐고 묻습니다.

There are times when I get frustrated because it feels like I'm not making any gains. 
아무런 발전이 없는 것 같아 좌절감이 들 때도 있습니다.

    실력이 늘지 않는 것 같아 답답할 때가 있습니다.
  - You might not make any gains at first.
    처음에는 실력이 늘지 않을 수도 있다.

    진척이 없어도 좌절하지 마.

 
But then, there are moments that remind me that all my effort was worth it.
하지만 그 모든 노력이 가치 있었다는 것을 깨닫게 해주는 순간들이 있습니다.
Several times when I was out with my son, I was able to help lost foreigners find their way. 
아들과 외출했을 때 길 잃은 외국인들의 길을 찾아준 적이 몇 번 있었습니다.
On family trips, I've struck up conversations with people from other countries, and we took pictures for each other. 
가족 여행에서는 다른 나라에서 온 사람들과 대화를 나누게 되어 서로 사진을 찍어주기도 했습니다.

One time, I emailed my son's favorite picture book author overseas. We ended up receiving an illustration with my son's name on it.
한번은 제 아들이 가장 좋아하는 그림책 작가에게 해외로 이메일을 보낸 적이 있었는데, 결국 아들의 이름이 적힌 삽화를 받게 되었습니다.
Moments like those make me realize how important foreign languages are for connecting with people in the wider world.
그런 순간들은 더 넓은 세상의 사람들과 연결되는 데 외국어가 얼마나 중요한지를 깨닫게 해줍니다.

A: 영어 공부에 정말 진심이신 것 같아요.
B: 네, 최근에 새로운 목표를 하나 세웠거든요.
A: 그게 뭐예요?
