앵무새

 

 

1. Ever since our last trip, when my son got to hold a parrot on his arm and even on his head, he's taken an interest in the birds.
지난 여행 이후로, 아들이 팔과 심지어 머리에 앵무새를 올려놓았을 때부터 그는 새들에 관심을 가지게 되었다.

- ever since: 그 이후로 계속
  - I've been happy ever since I met you. (너를 만난 이후로 나는 계속 행복하다.)
- take an interest in: ~에 관심을 가지다
  - She took an interest in music. (그녀는 음악에 관심을 가졌다.)
- get to: ~할 기회를 갖다
  - I got to meet the author. (나는 그 작가를 만날 기회를 가졌다.)



2. Then one day, he saw that a friend actually has a pet parrot, and he's been begging us non-stop to get one of our own.
그러던 어느 날, 그는 친구가 실제로 애완 앵무새를 가지고 있는 것을 보았고, 그때부터 우리에게 끊임없이 하나를 사달라고 조르고 있다.

- beg (for/to): 간청하다, 조르다
  - He begged for help. (그는 도움을 간청했다.)



3. Thanks to his love of parrots, we've been learning about them together.
그의 앵무새 사랑 덕분에 우리는 함께 그것들에 대해 배우고 있다.

- thanks to: ~덕분에
  - Thanks to you, I succeeded. (너 덕분에 나는 성공했다.)
- learn about: ~에 대해 배우다
  - We are learning about history. (우리는 역사에 대해 배우고 있다.)



4. Parrots are grouped into large, medium, and small categories.
앵무새는 대형, 중형, 소형 범주로 나뉜다.

- be grouped into: ~로 분류되다
  - The books are grouped into subjects. (책들은 주제별로 분류된다.)
- category: 범주
  - This falls into a different category. (이것은 다른 범주에 속한다.)



5. Contrary to popular belief, not all parrots can talk.
일반적인 믿음(고정관념)과 달리, 모든 앵무새가 말을 할 수 있는 것은 아니다.

- contrary to: ~와 반대로
  - Contrary to expectations, it rained. (예상과 달리 비가 왔다.)
- popular belief: 일반적인 믿음
  - Contrary to popular belief, bats are not blind. (일반적인 믿음과 달리, 박쥐는 눈이 멀지 않았다.)



6. And their personalities vary depending on the breed.
그리고 그들의 성격은 품종에 따라 다르다.

- vary: 달라지다, 다르다
  - Prices vary from store to store. (가격은 가게마다 다르다.)
- depending on: ~에 따라
  - The result depends on your effort. (결과는 네 노력에 달려 있다.)
- breed: 품종
  - This breed of dog is very friendly. (이 품종의 개는 매우 친근하다.)



7. Some breeds can live up to 80 years.
어떤 품종은 최대 80년까지 살 수 있다.

- live up to: ~까지 살다, (기대 등에) 부응하다
  - He lived up to 90 years old. (그는 90세까지 살았다.)
- up to: ~까지
  - You can buy up to three tickets. (티켓을 최대 세 장까지 살 수 있다.)



8. I'm still not sure whether we'll actually end up getting a parrot.
나는 우리가 실제로 결국 앵무새를 얻게 될지 아직 확실하지 않다.

- end up ~ing: 결국 ~하게 되다
  - He ended up losing the game. (그는 결국 경기를 졌다.)
- be not sure: 확신하지 못하다
  - I'm not sure about that. (나는 그것에 확신하지 못한다.)



9. But every time I see my son chatter away to his mom and me about something he's passionate about, it warms my heart.
하지만 아들이 자신이 열정을 가진 무언가에 대해 엄마와 나에게 쉴 새 없이 떠드는 모습을 볼 때마다 마음이 따뜻해진다.

- every time: ~할 때마다
  - Every time I see her, I smile. (그녀를 볼 때마다 나는 미소 짓는다.)
- chatter away: 쉴 새 없이 지껄이다
  - The kids chattered away happily. (아이들이 즐겁게 지껄였다.)
- be passionate about: ~에 열정을 가지다
  - She is passionate about art. (그녀는 미술에 열정을 가지고 있다.)
- warm one's heart: 마음을 따뜻하게 하다
  - The gift warmed my heart. (그 선물이 내 마음을 따뜻하게 했다.)

Dialogue

A: Son, I don't think we'll be able to raise a parrot at home.
B: Why not?
A: We go on family trips a lot, and parrots really don't like being left alone.
B: Oh, I see. But I still really want one.
A: Also, they're a lot more expensive than you'd think.
B: Then Santa can bring me one as a gift! That way it won't cost a thing!

A: 아들, 우리 집에서 앵무새 키우기는 힘들 것 같아.
B: 왜요?
A: 우리는 가족 여행을 자주 가는데, 앵무새는 혼자 있는 걸 아주 싫어한다.
B: 그렇군요. 그래도 정말 키우고 싶어요
A: 그리고 생각보다 분양가도 많이 비싸.
B: 그러면 산타 할아버지께서 선물로 주시면 되겠다! 그럼 공짜잖아요!
