Giving direction

 

1. I live in Busan, a city surrounded by breathtaking views of mountains and the ocean.
 내가 살고 있는 부산은 아름다운 산과 바다로 둘러싸인 세계적인 관광지입니다.

 

● breathtaking views: 숨이 멎을 듯이 아름다운 풍경
 - The island offers breathtaking views of the sunset.
  (그 섬에서는 숨 막히게 아름다운 석양을 볼 수 있다.)
 - We hiked up the mountain to enjoy the breathtaking views.
  (우리는 숨 막히는 경치를 보기 위해 산을 올랐다.)

2. It's a world-class travel destination. The coastline along the East Sea is absolutely stunning. Just looking out at the ocean lifts my mood and melts away stress.
 동해안을 따라 이어진 해안선은 정말 멋있습니다. 바다를 보고만 있어도 기분이 상쾌해지고 스트레스가 날아갑니다.

 - The city is home to a world-class university.
  (그 도시는 세계적인 대학을 보유하고 있다.)
 - She is a world-class athlete.
  (그녀는 세계적인 선수다.)

● melt away stress: 스트레스를 녹이다, 해소하다
 - Listening to music helps melt away stress.
  (음악을 들으면 스트레스가 풀린다.)
 - A warm bath can melt away stress after a long day.
  (따뜻한 목욕은 긴 하루 끝에 스트레스를 녹여준다.)

3. When I go for a walk to Cheongsapo, which is near my house, I often run into foreign tourists asking for directions.
 우리 집에서 가까운 청사포로 산책을 가면 길을 묻는 외국 여행객들을 자주 만나게 됩니다.

 - We stopped at a gas station to ask for directions.
  (우리는 길을 물어보려고 주유소에 들렀다.)

4. One time, I was on the bus when a tourist asked me where to get off, so I helped them get to the right stop.
 어느 날, 버스를 타고 가는데 외국인이 어디서 내려야 하냐고 물어서, 잘 내리도록 도와주었습니다.

5. I used to get flustered when foreigners asked me for directions. But after studying with EBS "입트영" and "귀트영," I've gained confidence in my English.
 외국인이 길을 물으면 예전에는 당황했지만, <입트영>과 <귀트영>을 같이 공부하다 보니 영어에 자신감이 붙었습니다.

 

● get flustered: 당황하다
 - He asked me so suddenly that I got flustered.
  (그가 너무 갑작스레 물어봐서 나는 당황했다.)
 - I get flustered whenever she is nearby.
  (그녀가 가까이 있으면 나는 늘 어찌할 바를 모른다.)

● gain confidence: 자신감을 얻다
 - She gained confidence after practicing her speech many times.
  (그녀는 연설을 여러 번 연습한 후 자신감을 얻었다.)
 - I gained confidence in cooking by trying new recipes.
  (새로운 요리를 시도하면서 요리에 자신감을 얻었다.)

6. Now, I don't panic. I can give directions and even make small talk.
 이제는 당황하지 않고 길을 가르쳐 줄 수 있고 간단한 대화도 주고받습니다.

 - I am too shy to make small talk with strangers.
  (나는 수줍음을 많이 타서 낯선 사람들과 가벼운 대화를 하지 못한다.)

7. It feels great to put what I've learned to use and actually be helpful to visitors.
 꾸준히 배운 영어도 활용하고, 우리나라를 찾은 외국인들에게 실질적인 도움도 줄 수 있어서 뿌듯합니다.

 

● put ~ to use: ~을 활용하다, 실제로 쓰다
 - She put her language skills to use during the trip abroad.
  (그녀는 해외여행에서 언어 능력을 활용했다.)
 - He put his knowledge to use in solving the problem.
  (그는 문제를 해결하는 데 자신의 지식을 활용했다.)

<Dialogue>

A: Lately, I feel like it's a good thing I've been studying English every day.

B: Oh, really?

A: Yes, it seems like there are way more foreign tourists these days.

B: That's right. I've noticed that too.

A: I gave directions to some tourists the other day, and it really felt rewarding.

B: It sounds like all your hard work is paying off.

A: 요즘 매일 영어 공부를 한 것이 다행이라는 기분이 들어요.

B: 아, 그래요?

A: 네. 요즘 보면 외국인 관광객들이 부쩍 늘어난 느낌이에요

B: 맞아요. 저도 그렇게 느꼈어요.

A: 지난번에 외국인 관광객들에게 길 안내를 해 주었는데, 너무 뿌듯하더라고요.

B: 열심히 노력한 결과가 성과로 나오는군요.
