Autumn Concert

 

 

1. On the first weekend morning after the long, sweltering summer finally let up, I went to a concert to welcome the fall.
 길고 무더웠던 여름이 끝난 첫 주말 아침, 나는 가을을 여는 음악회에 다녀왔다.

 

● sweltering: (숨 막히게) 무더운
 - We stayed indoors during the sweltering afternoon.
  (우리는 숨 막히게 무더운 오후 동안 실내에 머물렀다.)
 - The sweltering heat made it difficult to sleep at night.
  (숨 막히는 더위 때문에 밤에 잠들기가 힘들었다.)

● let up: (날씨, 긴장, 강도 등이) 누그러지다
 - The rain finally let up after three hours.
  (세 시간이 지나고 나서야 비가 잦아들었다.)
 - The pain didn’t let up until I took some medicine.
  (약을 먹을 때까지 통증이 줄지 않았다.)

2. It seemed like the concert organizers felt the same way.
 공연 기획자도 같은 마음이었나 보다.

 

● feel the same way: 같은 마음이다
 - It seemed like the concert organizers felt the same way.
  (공연기획자도 같은 마음이었나 보다.)
 - I hope you all feel the same way, too.
  (여러분도 같은 마음이기를 바랍니다.)
 - I was glad to hear her say that, because I felt the same way.
  (나도 같은 마음이었기 때문에 그녀가 그런 말을 해서 반가웠다.)

3. I had heard that the program was made up of pieces chosen to soothe minds and bodies worn out from the heat.
 더위에 지친 심신을 달래기 위해 선정한 곡들로 프로그램이 구성되었다는 이야기를 들었다.

 

● worn out: 지친, 기진맥진한
 - He felt completely worn out after a long day at work.
  (그는 긴 하루 일을 마친 후 완전히 지쳐 있었다.)
 - My shoes are worn out, so I need to buy a new pair.

4. The moment the first notes of the a cappella performance began, all the irritation and discomfort I had felt during the summer seemed to melt away.
 아카펠라로 이루어진 첫 소절이 울리는 순간, 한여름에 느꼈던 짜증과 불쾌함이 모두 녹아 없어지는 듯했다.

 

● seem to melt away: 녹아 없어지는 것 같다
 - All the irritation and discomfort I had felt during the summer seemed to melt away.
  (한여름에 느꼈던 짜증과 불쾌함이 모두 녹아 없어지는 듯했다.)

5. Throughout the concert, I felt grateful for this sense of release from the bad feelings I had all summer long.
 음악회 동안 여름 내내 품었던 언짢은 감정에서 벗어나 해방감을 느끼며 감사함이 밀려왔다.

 

● sense of release: 해방감, 놓인 느낌

7. I found myself hoping we could have another opportunity like this at the start of fall next year as well.
 내년 가을의 길목에서도 이 같은 기회를 가질 수 있으면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었다.

 

● find oneself ~ing: 자신도 모르게 ~하고 있다
 - I found myself smiling at the memory.
  (그 기억을 떠올리자 나도 모르게 미소 짓고 있었다.)
 - He found himself agreeing with her opinion.
  (그는 자신도 모르게 그녀의 의견에 동의하고 있었다.)
 - She found herself crying during the movie.
  (그녀는 영화 보는 중에 자신도 모르게 울고 있었다.)

A: This summer was unbearably hot, wasn't it?

B: Yes, it was. It really wore me out. I'm just glad it's finally starting to cool down.

A: Maybe we should go to a concert or something to lift our spirits.

B: That sounds great.

A: I'll look around and see if there's a good one coming up.

B: If we do go, I'd like to hear the kind of music that helps you unwind.

​

A: 올 여름 진짜 너무 더웠죠?

B: 네, 맞아요. 많이 지쳤죠. 이제라도 선선해지기 시작해서 다행이에요.

A: 기분전환으로 음악회 같은 거 다녀오면 어떨까요?

B: 좋은데요?

A: 곧 적당한 음악회가 있는지 찾아볼게요

B: 이왕이면 힐링되는 음악들을 들으면 좋겠네요.
