Apartment

1. In the area where I live, there didn’t used to be many apartment buildings like in the big cities.
내가 살고 있는 지역에는 아파트가 대도시처럼 많지 않았었다.

2. But as urban development began over the past few years, apartments have been springing up everywhere.
하지만 최근 몇 년 동안 도시 개발이 시작되면서 빼곡하게 아파트가 생겨나고 있다.

● spring up: (갑자기) 생겨나다, 나타나다
• New cafes and restaurants have been springing up all over the city.
 (새 카페와 식당들이 도시 곳곳에 갑자기 생겨나고 있다.)
• Problems began to spring up as the project expanded.
 (프로젝트가 확장되면서 문제가 생겨나기 시작했다.)

3. For the past two or three years, I’ve watched excavators carve away at the mountains to make room for the new buildings.
나는 2~3년 전부터 새 아파트를 지을 자리를 만들기 위해 굴착기가 산을 깎아내는 모습을 지켜보았다.

흙을 파내고, 나무를 베어내면, 그 동식물들은 다 어디로 갈까?

5. They lose their homes and are forced to find new places to live.
그들은 자신들의 집을 잃고, 새로운 서식지를 찾아 떠나야 하는 운명을 맞이하게 된다.

● be forced to: ~할 수밖에 없다, ~해야 한다
• The villagers were forced to leave their homes due to flooding.
 (마을 사람들은 홍수 때문에 집을 떠날 수밖에 없었다.)
• She was forced to admit her mistake.
 (그녀는 자신의 실수를 인정할 수밖에 없었다.)

6. Maybe they move to another mountain. Or maybe they have to come down into the towns where people live, just to find food.
아마도 다른 산으로 이사하거나, 먹이를 구하기 위해 사람 사는 마을로 내려와야 할 것이다.

우리는 마치 지구의 주인인 것처럼 행동하며 허락도 없이 서식지를 파괴한다.

동식물들과 어떻게 공존할지 고민해야 한다.

10. We should ask ourselves whether the development we’ve chosen is sustainable, and what we’ve lost along the way.
우리가 선택한 발전이 과연 지속 가능한 것인지, 그 과정에서 잃어버린 것들은 무엇인지 되돌아봐야 한다.

● sustainable: 지속 가능한
- We need to shift to sustainable energy sources.
 (우리는 지속 가능한 에너지로 전환해야 한다.)
- The company is working hard to build a sustainable business model.
 (그 회사는 지속 가능한 비즈니스 모델을 만들기 위해 노력하고 있다.)

A: Wow, there are so many new apartment buildings around here.

B: Yes, it's because the area has been redeveloped.

A: Wasn't this all just mountains before?

B: That's right. Remember how we used to go play in those mountains when we were kids?

A: Oh, that's right. What happened to all the animals that used to live there?

B: Now that you mention it, it's kind of sad.

A: 우아. 이 근처에 새 아파트가 엄청 많이 들어섰네

B: 응. 이 지역이 재개발되어서 그래.

A: 전에는 전부 산이었던 자리 아냐?

B: 맞아. 우리 어렸을 때 여기 산에 가서 자주 놀았던 거 기억나?

A: 그렇네. 그 산에 살던 동물들은 다 어떻게 되었을까?
