My Analog Car

1. I got my driver’s license 20 years ago. But since I hardly ever had a reason to drive, I stayed a beginner for 15 years.
 저는 20년 전에 운전면허를 땄지만, 그 후로 운전할 일이 거의 없어서 초보 상태로 15년을 보냈습니다.

 ● stay a beginner: 초보 상태로 남다
  - I got my license years ago but stayed a beginner for a long time.

2. Then I had a baby, and it became harder to use public transportation during COVID. So, I often had no choice but to drive.
 그러다 아이를 낳고 코로나로 대중교통 이용이 더 어려워지면서 어쩔 수 없이 차를 운전해야 하는 상황이 잦아졌습니다.

 ● have no choice but to: ~할 수밖에 없다
  - We had no choice but to cancel the trip.
   (우리는 여행을 취소할 수밖에 없었다.)
  - I had no choice but to drive because it was raining heavily.

3. Buying a new car felt like too much of a financial burden, so I inherited my dad’s seven-year-old car.
 새 차를 사는 건 경제적으로 너무 부담스러웠기에, 아빠가 타시던 7년 된 차를 물려받게 되었습니다.

 ● too much of a financial burden: 너무 큰 경제적 부담
  - Living in the city is too much of a financial burden for many people.
   (도시 생활은 많은 사람들에게 너무 큰 경제적 부담이다.)
  - Buying a brand-new car is too much of a financial burden right now.

4. You have to unlock the door and start the engine with a key. Even the side mirrors have to be folded and unfolded by hand.
 그 차는 열쇠로 차문을 열고 시동을 걸어야 하며, 사이드 미러도 수동으로 접었다 폈다 해야 합니다.

  - The windows have to be rolled up by hand.
   (창문을 손으로 올려야 한다.)
  - These machines were built by hand, not by robots.

5. The features are definitely a bit behind the times.
 분명 요즘 시대와는 조금 동떨어진 기능들이죠.

   (그 디자인은 조금 구식으로 보인다.)
  - The commercial feels a bit behind the times compared to competitors.

6. I couldn’t help feeling a little self-conscious every time I drove it.
 차를 운행할 때마다 살짝 민망한 마음은 숨길 수 없었습니다.

   (그녀는 밝은 분홍색 드레스를 입고 남의 시선을 의식했다.)

7. I especially tried to avoid people’s eyes in parking lots at supermarkets or department stores as I unfolded the side mirrors myself.
 특히 마트나 백화점 주차장에서 사람들의 시선을 피해 직접 사이드 미러를 펼 때면 더 그랬습니다.

8. But despite the inconveniences, I’m slowly getting used to it.
 하지만 이런 불편에도 불구하고, 저는 조금씩 적응해 가고 있습니다.

   (불편함에도 불구하고 그곳에 머물기로 했다.)

 ● get used to: ~에 익숙해지다
  - I’m still getting used to driving on the highway.
   (아직 고속도로 운전에 익숙해지는 중이다.)
  - You’ll get used to it soon.
   (곧 익숙해질 거예요.)

<Dialogue>

A: I inherited my dad's car. I have to start the engine with a key and open the side mirrors by hand.
B: You unfold the mirrors by hand?
A: At least the windows are automatic.
B: It's a good thing you said that. Otherwise I would have thought they were manual too.
A: I do get a bit scared because the car rolls back when I go uphill.
B: Get plenty of practice, and then buy a new car!

A: 아빠 차를 물려받았는데, 열쇠로 시동 걸고 사이드 미러도 손으로 펴야 해.
B: 사이드 미러를 손으로 편다고?
A: 그래도 창문은 자동이야.
B: 그건 다행이다. 말 안 했으면 창문도 수동인 줄 알았을 듯.
A: 언덕 올라갈 때 차가 뒤로 밀려서 조금 겁이 나긴 해.
B: 운전 연습 열심히 해서 새 차 사라!
